Chongqing today is a megacity of 30 million people—a cyberpunk landscape of skyscrapers connected by endless stairs, elevators, and tunnels. Climbing ten flights of stairs might only bring you to the ground floor of the next building. But before all that, I recall a port city built in layers, rising from the rivers up into the mountains. Chongqing sits where two rivers meet, surrounded on all sides by steep mountain terrain. That geography forced the city to grow vertically—neighborhoods stacked along the slopes of the mountains, staircases standing in for streets, and buildings propped up on stilts just to find level ground.  These works are an exercise in nostalgia and unreliable memory. They're loosely based on my own fading recollections of the city, clouded by years of travel elsewhere, and shaped by Wu Guanzhong's paintings of old Chongqing. I wanted to capture what little of the city I had left, permanently in clay, before it diluted any further.
